At a time when Marivaux's love stories were the joy of the theater, Dangerous Liaisons was circulating under the counter. But it was already theater !
Today, the language of Choderlos de Laclos shines brightly, and in the hands of director Arnaud Denis, it speaks of love and betrayal with the same insolent vigor... Or the art of libertinage taken to its climax.
Published in 1782, Choderlos de Laclos's epistolary novel is a fascinating literary work for its evocation of pleasure, the perfection of its style, and its first-person narrative. So much so that Arnaud Denis offers a new adaptation and a production in period costumes that highlights its brute force and the perfidy of its characters. Seven actors are at work, their faces powdered and wigged, perfect in this game of deception that will lead them to the depths of hell. Faced with the formidable Marquise de Merteuil (brilliant Delphine Depardieu), who has no equal when it comes to distilling her venom, the Viscount de Valmont (perfect as a seductive and unhealthy manipulator) is the best asset for plotting stories of deception. Schemes of which they themselves will become victims because the desire for revenge is not a good advisor! Arnaud Denis pulls the strings of this play with its perfectly oiled cogs, where we readily laugh at the language sallies of its diabolical heroes.
