Built by Italy on the eve of the Second World War, ouvrage 261 is part of the Vallo Alpino defense line (compared to the Italian "Maginot Line"). It has been fully restored to its original 1939 combat-ready state.
ouvrage 261 de Vievola was mainly used to control the Col de Tende road. It houses a 47/32 model 35 anti-tank gun, as well as two blocks equipped with Fiat 14/35 machine guns, designed to deny enemy troops access to the surrounding areas.
The museum will reopen in 2026, after extensive restoration work following the heavy damage caused by Storm Alex.
