The Villa Alpina, an imposing, colorful building in the center of Tende, has a rich and varied history. Originally designed as a vacation home, it was later transformed into a Protestant place of worship before becoming Tende town hall.
Built in 1884 on the initiative of Friedrich Mader, a Lutheran pastor from Nice, Villa Alpina was initially the family's holiday home. They moved permanently to Tende around 1905, and the villa became a Protestant place of worship.
During the First World War, the building was confiscated from the German Mader family.
In 1927, the commune officially acquired the Villa Alpina to house its new town hall, as the old building on what is now Rue de France had become too cramped. The building became a French town hall on September 16, 1947, and remains so to this day.
