A Greek fortress.
A mediator accompanies you for an archaeological and historical reading of the remains and to discover the landscapes of this exceptional site.
Archaeology is a never-ending adventure. A descent into bottomless depths, in search of the truth of what was. And so it was in the search for Hyères' forgotten past that, around 1910, it was discovered that, long before the Hyérois, there were the Olbiens. By chance, the ancient site of Olbia had been preserved on the territory of Hyères, where the western tombolo of the Giens peninsula meets the mainland. As always, digging and excavation were necessary. And Hyères was able to see where it had come from and reflect on its history.
In the 4th century BC, the Greeks of Massalia founded a fortress-colony to protect themselves from Ligurian pirates and maintain control of the sea. The fortress, 165 meters on each side, had not been destroyed by fatal urbanization.
destroyed by fatal urbanization, as in Nice, Antibes or Agde. This is Olbia: the only Massaliète settlement to have been completely preserved and made visible once again.
