Built under Richelieu between 1633 and 1637, the fort was erected to counter the Spanish threat to the Provencal coast. Today, the fort houses an exhibition open to the public during the summer season.
Listed in the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques, this fort originally consisted of a gun tower rising over 2 vaulted levels. It is characterized by its 5-pointed star-shaped enclosure.
Following the English occupation in 1793, part of the tower was destroyed. Under the Empire, the missing part was rebuilt on a square plan.
First declassified in 1885, the fort finally lost its military function when it became the property of the Parc national de Port-Cros in 1997.
Its position overlooking the north of the island offers a remarkable panorama of the Hyères roadstead.
During this time of year, free guided tours are organized from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:30 a.m., as well as self-guided tours from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- A 20-minute walk from the village
- Estimated time for self-guided tour: approx. 30 min.
- Estimated time of guided tour: approx. 1h30
In the event of closure of the Îles d'Or massifs (including Port-Cros) due to fire risk, Fort de l'Estissac is not accessible.
