THE “ROUTES DES SAVEURS”:

DISCOVER THE GOURMET ROUTES THROUGH THE CÔTE D’AZUR!

Between sea and mountains, the Routes des Saveurs (Flavour Routes) are true gourmet destinations which help us discover the region’s specialities. In the heart of this region bathed in light, olives, lemons, beer and other essentials of local gastronomy take us on a journey through the know-how of passionate producers, awakening our taste buds to these delights so typical of the Côte d’Azur.

TASTE MENTON’S “YELLOW GOLD”

Its fresh, tangy notes and luminous colour embody the sunny spirit of the Côte d’Azur. Biting into a Menton Lemon is like feeling the intoxicating scent of Mediterranean gardens, revealing a fascinating history that goes back centuries. A source of local pride, lemon from the Menton region is much more than just a simple citrus fruit. Its thick skin, very rich in essential oils, contains a juicy treasure whose undeniable benefit is its natural richness in vitamin C. While the Lemon Festival is the unmissable event in February, transforming the town of Menton into a real citrus paradise with its giant, colourful sculptures, the know-how of its artisans plunges us into this unique heritage during a visit to the region’s top producers.

As such, Moulin de Gorbio, Ferme des Citrons, Maison Gannac and Citronneraie des 4 Vents, to name but a few, reveal how they lovingly cultivate these exceptional citrus fruits, preserving the craft methods that make each harvest, completed only by hand, so unique. Because it’s in this preserved microclimate that Menton Lemon draws its exceptional character, encouraging us to bring home a souvenir imbued with the aromas of this sensory journey through the fragrant hills of the Côte d’Azur.

DISCOVER THE MAGICIANS OF THE BEEHIVE

Amid vast meadows bathed in soft light, bees work diligently among a mosaic of multicoloured flowers to create nectar with unique flavours. From Tende to Caille, Gréolières, Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey and La Colle-Sur-Loup, no less than fifteen unique places await us on the Route des Saveurs, to discover the honeys of the Côte d’Azur. And so many passionate producers who share their pleasure by revealing the secrets of the fascinating world of bees during a tasting.

True artists of the land, the beekeepers of the Côte d’Azur guide us through this symphony of flavours, inviting us to explore the subtle nuances of each harvest. From orange blossom honey, delicate and floral, to honeys from the “garrigue” scrubland and pre-Alps, imbued with intense aromatic notes, each variety offers an unforgettable taste experience. Beyond this aspect of their work, beekeepers also play a crucial role in preserving local biodiversity. Indeed, by helping pollinate the crops, bees are actively involved in balancing our ecosystem. As a result, each pot of honey carefully brought back from your visit becomes an invaluable gesture to support these men and women who work to preserve our natural heritage.

ENJOY THE ELIXIR OF THE SOUTH

On the Côte d’Azur, olive trees embody the quintessence of Mediterranean life. And it’s without doubt this typical southern climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and mild winters, that provides an ideal setting for growing olive trees. The richness of the soil, combined with plenty of sunshine, gives the olives their unique flavour, a true imprint of this land blessed by the gods. The Routes des Saveurs take us on a journey from the Grasse area to Menton country via the lands around Nice, to discover the olive groves of the Alpes-Maritimes region and their dedicated producers.

Because it’s much more than just a simple ingredient – olive oil is a true pillar of local gastronomy. Its use transcends the boundaries of cooking, enriching not just our favourite dishes, but those prepared by star chefs as well, who recognise the value of this exceptional oil, considering it an essential ingredient. Among the most common varieties, Cailletier, otherwise called “Niçoise”, which produces olives that are both fruity and balanced, perfect for producing quality olive oil. Precious witnesses of local history, these majestic trees continue to flourish and delight us, nourishing body and soul of those lucky enough to taste this Mediterranean treasure.

EXPLORE THE PASTURES TOUR

For cheese lovers looking for an immersive experience, the Routes des Saveurs take us from Coursegoules to Andon via Valbonne, Châteauneuf d’Entraunes and Isola. Within these farms and sheepfolds, traditions are always preserved. Each stage of production becomes a celebration of authenticity, thanks to the knowledge and passion of the breeders. While the real reward comes with tasting the region’s cheeses, the experience goes well beyond that, with the chance to feed the livestock, watch the milking processes up close and observe the cows, goats and sheep in their natural environment.

If cheese is the symbol of French heritage, often associated with a moment of sharing and pleasure, it’s also often combined with cycling! Don’t wait another minute – get on your bike and discover the 5 routes awarded the “Vélo & Fromages” (Bike & Cheese) label. From the family ride in La Brigue to more sporty loops, including the multi-day route through the Préalpes d’Azur, this memorable experience is an original way to explore the diversity of the region and its gastronomy, and to meet its passionate producers.

ENJOY THE JUICE OF THE VINE

Whether for a refreshing glass of white, a festive rosé or sophisticated red, the region’s wines take us to the heart of a taste adventure that celebrates the art of living in the Côte d’Azur! The vineyards of the Alpes-Maritimes are spread over a variety of lands, from sunny slopes to limestone hills. This diversity of soils, combined with the influence of the Mediterranean Sea, gives the grapes a palette of unique flavours.

The vineyards of the Alpes-Maritimes are also becoming popular destinations for wine tourism enthusiasts. Looking for an unusual experience on the Côte d’Azur? From the Promenade des Anglais, head inland to discover the Bellet vineyards, among the oldest in France, by electric bike! The route takes us towards Bellet Hill via a small road, then branches off towards the magnificent Château de Crémat, one of the nine wine estates in Bellet. From Nice to Saint-Jeannet, via Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Mandelieu-La-Napoule, Villars sur Var and Lérins Abbey, the wine estates offer guided tours, inviting us to delve into the history of local wine, discover the secrets of winemaking and, of course, taste these precious creations.*

EXPLORE THE TREASURES OF THE BREWERS

While the brewing tradition on the Côte d’Azur dates back several centuries, it’s only in recent decades that the craft beer scene has really boomed. Independent breweries, often family-owned, have embraced local heritage while exploring new taste paths to delight our taste buds. The Routes des Saveurs take us from Nice to Antibes, Saint-Martin-Vésubie to Isola, or to the heart of the Paillons Valley, to discover one of the many craft breweries on the Côte d’Azur.

Here, you can discover the art of beer making, which comes to life in the brewing rooms, where master brewers with exceptional know-how manage the meticulous process of creating this beverage. An intoxicating blend of malt aromas and fresh hops intertwines with the soothing sounds of brewing, revealing the harmonious dance between tradition and innovation. From refreshing blondes to rich, complex browns and balanced ambers, these flavours perfectly illustrate the rich heritage of the Côte d’Azur. Whether you like them traditional, citrus or plant-based, these unique creations invite you to a tasting full of nuances. Enjoy in moderation to fully appreciate the authenticity of the region with each sip!*
