7 Films that have made the Côte d'Azur a land of cinema

While the Cannes Film Festival has made the Côte d’Azur famous since 1970, many directors have chosen the region as a location for their films. Here are 7 of these legendary films to pay tribute to the 7th art on the Côte d’Azur!

1. AND GOD… CREATED WOMAN
2. BAY OF ANGELS

(ROGER VADIM, 1956) / (JACQUES DEMY, 1963)

1. Brigitte Bardot, the muse of all male desires, is without doubt an emblematic figure of the Côte d’Azur. So much so, in fact, that her appearance in this film, which caused a scandal, etched her image in Saint-Tropez. In fact, she married the film’s director!

2. As its name suggests, the film features Jeanne Moreau on Nice’s legendary Baie des Anges. The shoot also took in Monaco, Cannes and other parts of Nice.

3. THE CONSTABLE OF SAINT-TROPEZ
4. AMERICAN NIGHT

(JEAN GIRAULT, 1964) / (FRANÇOIS TRUFFAUT, 1973)

3. Louis de Funès and Michel Galabru, at the helm of the Saint-Tropez Gendarmerie, deliver one of France’s greatest comedies. The film’s caustic humor hasn’t aged a day, as evidenced by the crowds who still flock to photograph this famous Côte d’Azur gendarmerie!

4. Truffaut’s screenplay, a mise en abîme in the world of cinema, was shot entirely at the Studios de la Victorine in Nice, created in 1919 and renowned throughout Europe. It is also Nathalie Baye’s first major film.

5. THE BIG BLUE
6. THE CITY OF FEAR

(LUC BESSON 1988) / (ALAIN BERBERIAN, 1993)

5. A classic Luc Besson film, set partly at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. Jean Reno plays one of his greatest roles, with no diving doubles, like the rest of the cast. A teenage Besson dream come true.

6. If “City of Fear” has gained a cult following, it’s because it offers the most scathing satire of the Cannes Film Festival ever made. Alain Chabat and his Nuls have created an immense parody, starting with “La Carioca”, danced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in an American film of the same name.
