THE FONDATION MAEGHT: AMBITION AND CREATIVITY!

28 July 1964: Marguerite and Aimé Maeght inaugurate the foundation which bears their name.

The Fondation Maeght has incredible ambition and creativity that is dedicated to modern art and its greatest talents. Among the most influential gallery owners and art dealers on the planet, Aimé gathered everything under one roof: Braque, Calder, Chagall, Giacometti, Léger, Miró… Half a century later, it has lost none of its splendour. On the contrary, 200,000 visitors flock to Saint-Paul-de-Vence every year to admire its permanent collection and themed exhibitions.

The Fondation has a bibliographic collection of more than 9,000 works: manuscripts, collections, books…

Primarily made up of paintings, sculptures and drawings, the Maeght Foundation’s collection of modern art is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. It has grown steadily over the decades, constantly opening up to new artists. Garouste, Christo, Barceló, Folon and many others have joined their illustrious elders and a number of their most beautiful works: “La Vie” by Marc Chagall, the definitive version of “La Partie de Campagne” by Fernand Léger, “L’été” by Pierre Bonnard, “Red Knot” by Vassily Kandinsky…

OPEN AIR ART IN SAINT-PAUL-DE-VENCE

The largest of the Fondation Maeght masterpieces is undoubtedly… the foundation building itself!

Designed by Catalan José Luis Sert, one of the greatest architects of his time, the building has been enhanced by numerous artists. The sculpture garden that welcomes visitors is home to « Les Renforts », a monumental stabile by Alexander Calder. Further on, a Juan Miró work in the open air with his “Labyrinthe” peopled with sculptures and ceramics. At the bottom of the swimming pool… “Les Poissons”, a mosaic by Georges Braque. The central courtyard houses a number of Giacometti sculptures including “L’Homme qui Marche”, one of his most famous. And there’s an animated fountain by Pol Bury. Enchanting!
