The history of the château that inspired Coco Chanel
Built in 1906 in the medieval style, with its imposing machicolated tower and rococo ornamentation, this jewel of the Côte d’Azur is first and foremost, and will remain, a winegrowing site. Farmed since Roman times, with the Bellet appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) since the 1940s, it has been certified organic (AB) since 2014.
However, the château has undergone a metamorphosis and artistic renewal since it was bought by the Derichebourg family in 2017, a family of French industrialists with a passion for vineyards and the region. Proud of this unique heritage, the Derichebourg family has set out to highlight the château’s singular history through a number of changes: renovation of the rooms, respect for the colors of Nice and decoration of the interiors in a “Roaring Twenties” style. The château has been fitted out with the former furnishings of the Ritz, the famous Parisian palace. The prestigious furnishings of the legendary Coco Chanel suite have been preserved with all their authentic cachet.
And did you know? It is said that she was inspired by the Château’s initials, two intertwined C’s, to create the acronym for her prestigious fashion house.
