The Côte d'Azur / French Riviera wine route

The Côte d’Azur doesn’t just enjoy wine; it also produces some… and for has done so for a very long time: it was the Romans who introduced the vines. The tradition continued and, from the Golfe de Saint-Tropez to the area inland from Nice, Bacchus still has its faithful disciples. We invite you to follow us on the Côte d’Azur wine route!

ROSÉ, DID YOU SAY ROSÉ?

Rosé de Provence, the one loved for its delicate colour and intense fruitiness, was born in the Golfe de Saint-Tropez in the 80s when Régine Sumeire, owner of Château Barbeyrolles, had the idea of cold fermentation vinification for her Pétale de Rose wine – the idea was to gain in aroma without deepening the colour. A great success! Since then, the method has been adopted by the entire Provençal vineyard and although Barbeyrolles is still a classic, other areas of the peninsula, all classified as AOP Côtes de Provence, shine with the quality of their production: La Croix, Torpez, Bertaud-Belieu, Saint-Maur, etc.

FRÉJUS, A SPECIAL TERROIR FOR WINE!

Vineyards, cellar visits, tastings… Fréjus is a place of excellence on the Côte d’Azur wine route!

The vine growers of the former Forum Julii and the neighbouring communities are just as good as their neighbours in Saint Tropez. Especially since they benefit from a particularly favourable terroir with more frequent rain and wind than in the rest of the region, varied soils and the influence of the sea which means warmer winters and cooler summers. It was no mistake to grant them the right to vaunt their differences with more than one appellation, a terroir denomination: Côtes de Provence Fréjus. The mark of quality!

DISCOVER SOME SINGULAR WINES!

The Côte d’Azur wine route stops off in Villars-sur-Var, Ile Saint-Honorat and the Domaine de Barbossi…

Côtes-de-Provence is also made in the Alpes-Maritimes: in Villars-sur-Var, Clos Saint-Joseph is the only vineyard in the department to benefit from the famous appellation. Although they don’t lay claim to a PDO, the wines produced by the Lérins monks on Ile Saint-Honorat are also worth tasting. Their single grape varieties can be found on the tables of many Michelin starred chefs in the region.
A few kilometres away in the foothills of the Estérel, the Domaine de Barbossi is booming.

NICE, A WINEGROWING CITY

Wine buffs will fall in love!

Back in the Var valley… In Saint-Jeannet where Georges Rasse, in his Domaine des Hautes Collines, produces, among others, one very special wine: a tuilé wine, matured for nine months in large glass bottles – known as Marie-Jeanne – in the Côte d’Azur sunshine!
Just the flap of a wing away and we find ourselves on the Nice side. There, on the Saint-Roman de Bellet hill, nine producers keep alive one of the oldest appellations in France dating from 1941: AOC Bellet. Planted on terraces, this 100% Nice vineyard, the direct heir of the Romans, covers just sixty hectares.
