The best via ferratas on the Côte d’Azur

Are you a thrill seeker? A via ferrata is a cliff route, secured by ropes, that is a cross between hiking and climbing. Equipped with a harness, helmet, carabiners, lanyards and sometimes even a pulley, you are in the middle of nature on a sporting route that’s also great fun. Between the sea and mountains, the Côte d’Azur is a magnificent place for surpassing yourself. Here is a selection of the best via ferratas on the Côte d’Azur!

VIA FERRATA – « LA BALMA NEGRA » IN ROUBION

The Roubion via ferrata is one of the shortest on the Côte d’Azur.

Perfect introduction to the activity, it is suitable for children over 1m30 tall. A 10 minute walk from the village of Roubion, this 300-metre route crosses a cliff at an altitude of 1500 metres, overlooking the entire Tinée valley. On the program, metal ladders, a passage through a cave and a rope bridge. Allow 1½ hours to complete this aerial route. No need for a pulley: all you need is a helmet, a harness and a double lanyard with a shock absorber and carabiners. You can rent all the necessary equipment at the Tourist Office at the entrance to the village.

VIA FERRATA – CANYONS DE LANTOSQUE!

A water adventure for this via ferrata, which overlooks the Vésubie!

Surprising and unique: a large part of the Lantosque via ferrata route takes place above the water. This itinerary, above the Vésubie, is very pleasant in summer because it is well shaded. Suitable for children from 1m40 tall, this 1200 metre long via is perfect for beginners as it offers three escape routes. The route ends with a vertiginous 100 metre long footbridge: thrills guaranteed! There is also an optional zip line at the end of the route. You can rent all the equipment at the entrance to the village: remember to book in advance!

VIA FERRATA – “LA CIAPPÉA” IN LA BRIGUE

Dizzying adventure for fans in search of thrills in La Brigue!

Overlooking the medieval city, La Brigue via ferrata is an itinerary reserved for independent and experienced enthusiasts. No equipment hire is possible on site: however, you have to go to the Municipal Tourist Office in La Brigue to pay your entrance fee and collect the keys to the gate. This demanding 600-meter course includes a 120 meter zip line, as well as 8 rope bridges, including one 27 meters high over the void!
If you are new to via ferrata, you can call on a guide from the Bureau des Guides du Mercantour.

VIA FERRATA – “BAUS DE LA FREMA” IN LA COLMIANE

A very aerial and athletic mountain route!

This via ferrata route is the longest on the Côte d’Azur: allow at least 5 hours to complete the 1,600 meters. Fortunately, there are escape routes along the way. The difficulty increases and some parts of the course are optional. My favourite part is the cave: you’ll love the great feeling of emptiness! This via ferrata is suitable for children at least 1m40 tall, but keep in mind that it is long and demanding: remember to take water, a phone, and energy bars with you. You can rent equipment at the Station de la Colmiane but book it beforehand.
