Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, the rulers of Thebes. After Jocasta's suicide and Oedipus's exile, Antigone's two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, killed each other in a struggle for the throne of Thebes.

Antigone defies the decree of Creon, the new king, who forbids her from burying her brother Polynices. Despite the ban, she returns to her brother’s body several times in an attempt to give him a proper burial. The play explores themes such as resistance, respect for the law, and the exercise of power.
