Description
Headdress-making workshop.
The students in the DN MADE program drew inspiration from Chagall’s stained-glass window *La Rose bleue* to create headpieces that… An image of a headpiece created for the October 2026 creative workshops on ornamentation and composition recreates the stained-glass window’s effects of transparency and light. Traditional Russian headdresses called “Kokochnik” were originally reserved for married women and were richly embroidered with beads and gold thread. Today, they are worn with traditional dresses at folk festivals, dance performances, and theater productions. Men, for their part, wore “Ushanka” or “Chapka,” a traditional fur hat with flaps that can cover the ears and the nape of the neck, or be folded up and tied on top of the hat. In Russian, these names mean “cap.” Now it’s your turn to make your own Chapka and Kokochnik, inspired by Chagall’s childhood memories. Children and adults alike can make their own headwear using Canson paper, colored paper, glossy paper, ribbons, fabric, scissors, and glue.
