Description
A production that plays with light and shadow, blending theater, violin, and projected artwork and archival footage.
Montdevergues, 1929. In the cold silence of her confinement, an elderly Camille Claudel engages in an impossible dialogue with her past. She breathes new life into the feverish letters she wrote to Auguste Rodin—the master, the lover, the absent one.
On stage, Camille and Rodin are reunited in a dance of memory, oscillating between the creative effervescence of their Parisian youth and the solitary confinement of their twilight years. Carried by the incisive presence of Violaine Darmon’s violin, the play explores the “fire” that united them and the “ashes” it left behind.
Paced by the lucid yet detached writings of Paul Claudel and the clinical detachment of medical reports from the era, the performance becomes a visual and auditory immersion into the genius of these two giants. Through a digital set design projecting their masterpieces, the marble comes to life, their hands brush against one another, and their torments crystallize.
Camille Claudel & Auguste Rodin: The Shadow of Stone is not merely the story of a breakup; it is the autopsy of a stifled genius and the portrait of an artist who, even in the silence of exile, made matter scream.
By Bernadette André (Camille Claudel) and Joël Scholtès (Auguste Rodin)
