Fort du Cap-Martin, 1 allée Marie-Henriette, 06190 Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

Description

Located at the far end of the Maginot Line, and built between 1930 and 1933, this structure protected French territory from a possible Italian invasion.
Buried 25 meters underground, the Cap-Martin Maginot Fort is a treasure of our cultural heritage, preserved and restored since 1997 by volunteers from the AMICORF association (Friends of the Commission for the Organization of Fortified Regions), with the support of the municipality and the Alpes-Maritimes Department. In June 1940, 354 crew members, including 11 officers, lived and fought there to halt the advance of Italian troops. Damaged by bombing, then looted and vandalized, the fort—covering a total of 2,400 m²—has been almost entirely restored by AMICORF volunteers. During European Heritage Days, discover a one-hour tour of the fort, beginning with an exterior guided tour followed by a visit to the ground floor and the first basement level (covering about one-third of the fort). A striking immersion into the daily lives of the soldiers: recreations of the hospital and medical office, a period kitchen, barracks, along with original music and lighting, transport visitors back to the atmosphere of 1940. New this year: the opening of a screening room inside the fort.
