Description

Fort Sainte-Agathe is opening its doors free of charge for European Heritage Days, which are dedicated to photographic heritage and heritage at risk.
On September 19 and 20, come visit Fort Sainte-Agathe for free. Since ancient times, its remarkable location has allowed for the simultaneous surveillance of the Hyères harbor and a wide area around the village, which it protected from Saracen raids and banditry of all kinds. In 1531, while passing through Provence, King Francis I decided to reinforce the original structure and establish a garrison on the island of Porquerolles to protect the inhabitants and the Provençal coastline. Behind walls 4 meters thick, the tower houses a large, 6-meter-high room with a domed vault and an oculus. It is topped by a terrace offering an exceptional view of the island and the Hyères harbor. The barracks house a permanent exhibition on the island’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage.
