Description
The Biot Museum of History and Ceramics is located on the site of the former Saint-Jacques Hospital, a legacy of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John, whose cistern has been preserved.
The temporary exhibition gallery is located in the former Chapel of the White Penitents, adjacent to the hospital.
From the Middle Ages through the modern era, the pilgrimage routes to Rome, Jerusalem, and Santiago de Compostela had a profound impact on Europe and fostered the growth of hospices designed to welcome travelers, the poor, and pilgrims. Situated along major travel routes, these places of welcome and care embodied the values of hospitality, solidarity, and brotherhood. As a place of passage, inner quest, encounters, and transformation, the Way of St. James and its associated heritage span the centuries and capture the collective imagination; the museum has invited artists to offer a contemporary interpretation of the theme of the journey: a physical, spiritual, intimate, symbolic, collective, initiatory, or poetic journey. The subtitle “To Each Their Own Path” paves the way for personal, sensitive, and original approaches.
