Exposition à l'espace sans nom : Caroline Sury

For this second exhibition of the 2026 summer season, *Espace Sans Nom* is honored to welcome Caroline Sury, a multidisciplinary artist and a driving force in independent art publishing since the early 1990s. Caroline Sury is a visual artist, performer, publisher, and comic book author. She draws inspiration from naïve art and art brut, embracing their rejection of academic rules, the (deliberate) imprecision of the line, and the (falsely) childlike quality of the drawing. Her work, created using cut-out paper or India ink, is autobiographical and politically engaged. It recreates and interprets the chaotic path that connects memories, at the heart of a graphic jumble featuring trashy and ramshackle elements. In her latest works, Caroline Sury has created a series of figures cut out of paper. The artist draws inspiration in particular from “katchina” dolls—handcrafted dolls created by the Hopi, a Native American people from the arid lands of Arizona—which represent their animist deities. The cut-out technique allows her to strip away form and color, retaining only their absence—black. The human figure is thus reduced to its most essential graphic aspect: that of a pure motif. Caroline Sury graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux in 1989. Her work is inextricably linked to her involvement in the editorial and graphic avant-garde of the 1990s. In 1993, she co-founded Le Dernier Cri, a Marseille-based publishing house that quickly became a staple of the independent art publishing scene. Through its books and screen-printed works produced using traditional artisanal methods, Le Dernier Cri influenced an entire generation of artists inspired by its visceral “do-it-yourself” spirit, by the raw, unpolished nature and uniqueness of its editorial offerings—which ran counter to academic elitism—and by its references to punk iconography and art brut. It was during this period that Caroline Sury published her first self-produced works. Her comic strips were later published in the Swiss magazine *Strapazin*, and her two graphic novels, *Bébé 2000* (2006) and *Cou tordu* (2010), were released by L’Association. In 2020, she was selected by the Angoulême Festival for her book *Un matin avec mademoiselle Latarte*, published by Le monte en l’air. Five years later, the magazine *Fanatic Female Frustration*, to which she contributes, won the Alternative Comics Award at the same festival, tied with the German magazine *Hairspray*. The two magazines joined forces in 2026 for an exhibition on feminist comics at the Neurotitan Gallery in Berlin. Caroline Sury lives and works in Marseille. She has been exhibiting her work internationally since 1990 and is regularly invited to artist residencies or art and publishing fairs. She is the recipient of several writing grants from the Centre National du Livre, and her drawings have regularly appeared in *Libération*, *Le Monde*, and *La Provence*. She also leads art workshops for a variety of audiences.
