"Far North" Film Talk with Altaïr Conférences

For the 2026–2027 season, Altaïr Conférences is organising film talks on the theme of travel and exploration at the Cinéma de la Baie des Isles. Screening on the Far North: sailing through the ice, a film by Sébastien Roubinet. Synopsis: “In the summer of 2022, Sébastien, Éric and Jimmy embarked on an extraordinary 2,500-kilometre crossing through the heart of the northern Canadian archipelago, one of the most isolated, hostile… and least explored regions on the planet. For three months, far from any human presence, they made their way through an extreme environment, shaped by wind, ice and silence. Here, every step is a conquest. Every day brings its own share of uncertainties, from unpredictable weather conditions and unstable terrain to a vast expanse devoid of landmarks. But their adventure goes beyond a mere feat of endurance. Working closely with scientists, they undertook a genuine field mission: collecting environmental DNA samples to better understand invisible ecosystems, conducting wildlife censuses in these fragile territories, and compiling unique photographic and video archives of the last remaining multi-year ice, now under threat. As the kilometres passed, their expedition became a rare testimony: that of a changing world, where the boundary between exploration and scientific observation is blurring, giving way to a committed human adventure at the heart of the major climate challenges of our time."
