Description
Born in Escondido, California, of Italian descent, Gabrielle Cavassa began "obsessively listening" to records from an early age.
Largely self-taught, she developed a unique approach to singing that would later characterize her art. Cavassa earned a Bachelor of Music degree from San Francisco State University, but attributes her "real education" to the Bay Area music scene. She moved to New Orleans in 2017, where she continued her training in local clubs. In 2020, Cavassa independently released a self-titled debut album produced by collaborator Jamison Ross. In 2021, she won the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Cavassa's appearance on Joshua Redman's Blue Note album, where are we (2023), prompted DownBeat to call her a "star in the making". Stereophile wrote: "For many, the revelation of this album will be Cavassa. Her voice touches you to the core. She's singular, but inspires confidence with her clarity and almost physical intimacy... her intuitive interpretations and captivating voice nail you to your seat."
