Description
To understand the significance of Operation Dragoon—the code name for the Provence landings—a walking tour will provide insight into the reasons behind the landings in southern France, which complemented those in Normandy.
The tour will take place at three locations:
The first part will be at the Salins de Hyères, where the tour will highlight the presence of German forces along the coast, notably through the French Navy blockhouse and the remains of the former German defenses. Please note: Since this fortification is closed to the public, visitors will not be able to enter.
The second part will take place on Badine Beach, where we will discuss the many debates that led to the selection of the location and date for Operation Dragoon.
A third and final stop at Giens Square, where the panoramic view will serve as a backdrop to explain the Nazi strategy aimed at preventing any Allied landings on the French Mediterranean coast.
To travel between the various stops on the tour, visitors will use their own vehicles.
The tour is intended for people who are not mobility-impaired and who can stand for a certain amount of time. Participants must wear shoes suitable for the route (such as sneakers, tennis shoes, etc.).
This tour is intended for military history enthusiasts who already have a basic knowledge of World War II. It is therefore not recommended for young children.
