Description
While the hero Hernani lends his name to the work, it's the character of Doña Sol who really drives the story: a free, stubborn woman, she embodies all those who free themselves from male power and old norms.
Facing her are men who are blind, selfish or prisoners of an absurd loyalty: loyalty to a father, to a given word, to a desire for power even more burning than the desire to be loved.
In adapting Hernani, Laurent Brethome creates a vibrant theatrical fresco, deploying all the epic and popular power of Victor Hugo's work. Keen to bring the author's revolutionary verse to life and make it accessible to all, he has created a version that focuses on the four central figures, and highlights the feminist aspect of the play.
Faithful to Hugol's vision, which places the people at the heart of the tragedy, Laurent Brethome is keen to bring together local actors and amateurs. Each evening, alongside the quartet, fourteen amateurs take on the role of brigands, members of the court or shadows in the crypt, forming a moving, unifying chorus that witnesses the fate that befalls the protagonists. In this way, the voices of those who, in the shadows, observe and suffer power resonate.
