Description
This hike takes in the emblematic Terre Rouge lakes and the Combe Grosse lake, before arriving at the Pas du Loup. It marks the boundary between the upper Chastillon valley and the Rio Freddo valley.
From the parking lot of the Chalet Marano hotel (2,070 m - b.90a). Turn left onto the Terre Rouge Lakes Trail. Follow this trail as it climbs up the sunny side of the resort to marker 91, where you turn right (east).
Cross a scree slope (marked by cairns), then cross the Terre Rouge valley (by fording) to reach marker 92 (2,360 m).
Turn left and you’ll quickly reach the first lake. Walk along the shore of another small lake. At marker 93 (2,425 m), take the trail to the left that ascends the Pas du Loup valley (beautiful view of all the Terre Rouge lakes).
After reaching Combe Grosse Lake (2,532 m), easily climb the final slopes leading to Pas du Loup (2,665 m), where the border marker is located.
Return via the same route.
If you take a slight detour, you’ll find a water source, dry toilets, and a snack bar for hikers.
