Description
Every year, the City of Nice celebrates Catherine Ségurane, the legendary heroine of the Nice Resistance. This tribute honors this beloved figure, who embodies the courage and identity of Nice.
The legend of Catherine Ségurane dates back to August 1543, when the troops of Francis I, allied with the Turks, attempted to capture the city. The troops of Nice were fighting at a ratio of 1 to 10, and according to legend, it was the washerwoman Catherine Ségurane who struck down the Turkish ensign with a single blow of her washboard. This act of bravery is said to have galvanized the troops and the people of Nice, enabling them to repel the Franco-Turkish forces.
