Description
The garden was designed at the end of the 18th century, when Jean-Paul de Clapiers-Cabris had his mansion built by Milan-born architect Jean Orello.
This garden was designed in the late 18th century, when Jean-Paul de Clapiers-Cabris had his mansion built by Jean Orello, an architect of Milanese origin.
In 1919, François Carnot, son of the former president of the republic, had the idea of transforming this mansion into a museum. After appealing to the public for donations, a museum collection was assembled that traced the history of Provence, and the museum opened in 1921.
In 1967, following the advice of Viscount Charles de Noailles and based on an inventory drawn up in 1778, a charming French-style garden planted with rosebushes, lemon trees, trimmed boxwoods, and a magnolia grandiflora was redesigned.
This garden features a fountain with a moss-covered rock. It contains Italian cypresses and medlar trees. A Chinese wisteria complements this variety of plants, which has been enriched over the centuries.
It was recently redesigned by Jean Mus (2010).
