Description
Anxious to fashion the ideal wife, Arnolphe has raised Agnès away from the world and knowledge, convinced that ignorance will ensure her submission. But when young Horace falls in love with her, the mechanism he has patiently built up goes haywire.
As Arnolphe multiplies prohibitions and warnings, Agnès learns to think for herself and to thwart oppression. Through her love for Horace, she discovers that no authority can take away her heart's choice. Caught in the trap, Arnolphe watches helplessly as his supposed domination collapses.
Following last season's production of Ionesco's La Leçon, Robin Renucci continues his exploration of classical texts, reinscribing them in today's political context. In keeping with his commitment to offering theater that is both rigorous and accessible, the director of La Criée - Théâtre National de Marseille invites us to question Molière's avant-garde views on the place of women in society.
L'École des femmes is a comedy in verse which, from its premiere in 1662, has provoked much debate. Beyond the laughs, Molière addresses a timeless concern: men's attitude to women's autonomy, and to what they would like to control. He wrote to denounce the pitfalls of male power.
