This lecture traces the island’s cultural history, its major milestones since antiquity, its ties to the British Empire as well as to continental Europe and the United States, its symbols, and its cultural imagination. Songs and music evoke the events of the past, the emotions experienced, and the deep-rooted culture of this country with its unique heritage and traditions that are constantly renewed and reaffirmed. The Ginberry Trio presents an Irish repertoire drawn primarily from tunes played in pubs (reels, jigs, hornpipes, slides, polkas, waltzes...). These dance tunes stem from the culture of the “dancing masters” who emerged in 18th-century Ireland. Even today, this tradition remains very much alive on the island and around the world.
