Description
In this exhilarating mix, the energy of urban dance collides with clubbing culture and traditional forms, unleashing 75 minutes of liberating frenzy. Exhilarating!
With this work, created in 2022, Marco da Silva Ferreira has taken international stages by storm. It is impossible to remain unmoved by the electrifying surge generated by his community of ten performers—women and men, including himself—whose diverse physiques match the power of their dancing. At times tightly bound together in an irresistible wave, at others swept into virtuosic variations in solos or duets, the performers move within a meticulously crafted choreography.
Driven by layers of electronic sound and the insistent rhythms of a DJ and a percussionist performing live on stage, their legs weave tirelessly, creating friction and a bridge between past, present, and future. The choreography draws on the gestures of voguing, the pounding energy of jumpstyle, the hypnotic flow of house, as well as the steps of rancho, a traditional Portuguese folk circle dance. It also expresses the strength of a united collective engaged in a bold affirmation of identity, as illustrated in the sequence where all the dancers, fists raised toward the audience, chant the protest song “Cantiga sem maneiras” by poet José Mário Branco. Another message appears in the slogan “All walls will fall,” written by one of the dancers—embodying the overturning force of a vibrant piece that celebrates the power of dance.
