Description
After stopping at the Roquevignon plateau in the early morning of March 2, 1815, Napoleon and his troops stopped in Saint-Vallier, on Place de l’Apié near the church.
The Emperor paused in the shade of the great elm tree, which was toppled by the wind in 1867; it was replaced in 1869 by the current Napoleon Column. On the cut-stone seat surrounding the tree—which had become historic—the following was engraved: “Napoleon sat here on March 2, 1815.”
The glass from which Napoleon drank the refreshment offered by the innkeeper Réal was long kept as a precious memento, then sold about a hundred times!
