From 12 April to 20 September, the Peynet and Cartoon Museum is hosting the exhibition ‘Quino’
Quino (whose real name is Joaquín Salvador Lavado) was born on 17 July 1932 in Mendoza, Argentina. He has received numerous prizes and awards in his own country and throughout the Spanish-speaking world. In France, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters and was honoured with the insignia of Officer of the Legion of Honour. Quino is a consummate artist: brilliant, sharp-witted and universal. He is also a dissident and a revolutionary who voices his dissent not only against his country’s regime but also against the direction the world has taken since the 1950s. He was forced into exile from Argentina in 1976.
His career began in 1954; Mafalda was created ten years later, and through her, Quino conveyed his vision of the world to us for almost 20 years. Mafalda, like many comic strips, adapts to its reader; it is a combination of light-heartedness and seriousness. Children see her as a clever little girl surrounded by her friends with stereotypical personalities; adults find in her a reflection of the state of the world that prompts more philosophical questions and reflections.
