Walking in the footsteps of the old Franco-Italian customs officers, the stroll ends in a cool breeze.
From La Roche Valdeblore
Period: All year round, weather permitting.
Duration: 1 hour
Ascent 170m / Descent 170m
An ideal place for a stroll where it's cool even in the height of summer, the wide path leading to the Millefonts valley was once the Franco-Italian border: in 1860, the upper territories were attached to Italy to form the royal hunting reserve. Nevertheless, the landowners enjoyed their property to the full. Until 1947, travellers were subject to a checkpoint at the old customs post (beacon 142). Since the post-war period, the boundary markers have moved to the highest peaks in the commune, above the Mollières valley.
From La Roche (beacon 141), follow the narrow, flat road to the chapel of St Jean-Baptiste; continue past beacon 142, where the old customs post can be seen on the right above the canal.
Then fork right onto the Chemin des Millefonts.
At marker 143, take a right-hand path through a forest of Scots pines and, by descending steeply, reach the village of La Roche.
