Description

Built in the neo-Romanesque style from 1913 and inaugurated in 1923, the church is the only sanctuary dedicated to Saint Joseph in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Interesting stained-glass windows can be seen inside.
The construction of the Saint Joseph Shrine in Beausoleil was entrusted to architect Paul Lajoie, who chose the Neo-Romanesque style—reminiscent of medieval Romanesque art—for its beauty and the simplicity of its lines and decoration. The building is thus shaped like a Latin cross. According to tradition, the apse faces east because it is the first part of the church to be illuminated in the morning, thus symbolizing the resurrection of Christ. Built of stone from La Turbie, like the Cathedral of Monaco, the church is approximately 55 meters long, with a central nave 8 meters wide and 12 meters high, flanked by two side aisles, each 4 meters wide. The dome rises above the crossing of the transept, 18 meters above the ground. The stained-glass windows located to the right and left of the first bay of the nave are signed “SA Maumejean Frères,” were installed around 1930, and are in the Art Deco style. In the early 1970s, the stained-glass artist Favarel, whose studio was located in Beausoleil, completed the installation of the stained-glass windows in the sanctuary. Resolutely modern compared to the rest of the church, his works serve as true sources of light that can be found throughout the building.
