This one-act comedy by Marivaux tells the story of a young peasant, Blaise, who suddenly inherits a great fortune.
This change in status completely alters his behavior: he becomes pretentious and looks down on those around him.
His fiancée, Colette, and the other characters try to bring him back to his senses.
Through comedic situations, the play critiques the effects of money on human relationships. Ultimately, Blaise realizes his mistakes and returns to a simpler way of life.
