Thursdays at the Villa: Jean-François Gonzalez—Will Artificial Intelligence Replace the Surgeon?

Wanting to become a military doctor, he enrolled in the Army Medical School in Lyon in 1988 and spent 28 years in the military, including several overseas assignments. After graduating from the Lyon School of Medicine in 1997 and being appointed Associate Professor at Val de Grâce in 2012, he joined the Nice University Hospital in 2016. There, he was appointed Chief of the Trauma Department in 2019, Chief of the Department of Orthopedics and Sports Traumatology in 2020, and then, in 2022, Head of the “Operating Rooms and Sterilization” Division. A lecturer at the Nice Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Jean-François Gonzalez is the author of approximately 100 international scientific articles, primarily on shoulder and knee surgery. For this “Thursday at the Villa” event focused on medicine, Professor Jean-François Gonzalez will discuss technological advances in surgical practice in general, and more specifically in orthopedic surgery. He will analyze the role of digital technology in the planning and execution of surgical procedures, as well as the current status of robotic surgery. Drawing on his expertise—he achieved a world first in December 2025 by using a French-designed robot with automated cutting capabilities for the first time in knee replacement surgery—he will help us understand whether Artificial Intelligence might one day replace the surgeon. The evening includes: - Champagne reception - Thematic lecture - Dinner at Restaurant Béatrice, prepared by Chef Myriam Barda
